You ARE a Good Poker Player, Right?

If you ask the question, "What does it take to be a great poker player?" you'll get all sorts of answers. Some folks will say that it's knowing the percentages, others will argue it's all about reading your opponents. You'll get players telling you that it's some combination of heart, guts, and discipline.

None of those answers are wrong, but none of them are universal truths either. If there IS a Grand Unified Theory of Poker out there, it may lie in this simple sentence--good poker players consistenly make good decisions. Regardless of the circumstances, players who make wise decisions are going to be more successful than players who make rash decisions. This seems somewhat self-evident (maybe even more than "somewhat"), but it's easier said than done. It's not hard to tighten up your starting-hand selection; improving your decision-making isn't so easily accomplished.

Well, let me give you a head-start on that. The first event of the UltimateBet Online Championships kicks off tomorrow night at 8PM. UltimateBet is guaranteeing a prize pool of at least $125,000, and as I write this there are 98 players signed up. Now, obviously that's going to shoot up as most players will buy-in right before kickoff, but in many tournaments the prize money is determined solely by the number of entries. That's not the case for the UBOC. UltimateBet is sweeting the pot for it's players, and that could give you a lot more bang for your tournament buck. As I peruse the info for Event #1, I see that the payout for first place currently stands at $35,625. That's a very healthy return for a $215 investment, and if enough players enter that of course could rise.

So, if you play in the biggest online tournaments, and you look for situations where you might enjoy a positive expected value, I suggest you cancel your engagements for Friday night and join us at UltimateBet. It would be a good decision. A wise decision. And you're all about making good decisions, right?
