'Twas the Night Before the WSOP

I could continue with the title and say "And all through the Rio, not a creature was stirring", but in fact the Amazon Room is a beehive of activity as some last-second touches are added before tomorrow's opening poker tournaments. I walked around for a bit this afternoon and it's just a stunning sight, hundreds of poker tables stretching in every direction, all that caramel-colored leather and bright green baize a delight for the eyes:

Something new that I only saw from afar is the final table area, which is in a back corner and raised high on a dais. I couldn't get close enough for a good photo but it looks very cool, very dramatic.

As are the huge posters of the previous Main Event winners that surround the entire room. It's striking to see all those famous faces staring down at you, it really gives you a sense of the WSOP's history, of how large these tournaments loom over the game. And there will be a fair few players who, sitting across from a former World Champion, will let their eyes roam to the ceiling...only to find that their tormentor is still right there, twenty feet tall and looming over them.

The next seven weeks are gonna be one hell of a ride. Amateurs laboring in obscurity will become famous overnight. The game's most gifted players will use this stage to display their talents. And there will be approximately 1,382,944 bad beat stories told in the hallways. I'll probably hear one or two of them. Can't wait to get started.
