This Time, Not So Lucky

It might have been coincidence, but during the World Series of Poker it seemed like Jordan Morgan made a run in every event I covered. He cashed four times and I'm pretty sure I was there scribbling away every time he went deep. Not a bad Series for a player who was once known primarily for his online play--that is, until he took 2nd place at the 2006 U.S. Poker Championships.
Of course, Morgan still plays online and is still considered one of the best in the world, and last night he made the final table of our $200,000 Sunday Guaranteed Tournament, playing under his online moniker of iMsoLucky0. He arrived at the final table as the chip leader, but he had his work cut out for him if he wanted the win, as two other familiar names joined him in the final ten--Chris "LUHMAN" Martin and a name I just knew from having seen it before, rkruok.
This time luck was not on iMsoLucky0's side. He doubled up the short-stacked LUHMAN when he called an all-in with pocket Nines and lost the race when LUHMAN's A-J found a bullet on the flop. He then made a move with Ac-Qc against ankstrajks, check-raising all-in after a Jack-high flop, only to learn ankstrajks had pocket Aces. Morgan didn't hit his gutshot draw and went out in 7th place.
Ankstrajks made it down to the final three along with LUHMAN and rkruok, but was knocked out when he moved in with Jc10s and was called by LUHMAN's pocket fives. When he lost that race we were down to heads-up, with LUHMAN holding a 1.3 million to 800K lead over rkruok. With the chip stacks fairly even you might have expected a long, drawn-out heads-up battle.
And you would've been wrong. Just two hands later the two players saw a 7d-6d-3d flop, and rkruok check-raised all-in after LUHMAN made a 97,000 bet. LUHMAN called and showed Jc-7h for top pair, while rkruok held Kd-9s for two overcards and the flush draw. Rkruok had about a zillion outs, but the Js on the turn gave LUHMAN two pair and a much firmer grip on the hand. And when the 10s fell on the river rkruok was our 2nd place finisher, winning $27,000. And Chris "LUHMAN" Martin added to his impressive online resume with the $200,000 Sunday Guaranteed title and the $45,000 first prize.
