The Ten Nights Before the Twelve Days Of Christmas

With Thanksgiving fading in the rear-view mirror we are now deep into the holiday season. True, some stores jump the gun a bit and set up displays featuring reindeer and elves around Labor Day, but the gloves really come off once the turkey carcass hits the trash. Try as you might, it's hard to avoid the non-stop merriment. Everywhere you turn, there's Santa! Your favorite shows, pre-empted for Rudolph and Frosty. And I don't need to tell you that over the next four weeks you're gonna hear Willie Nelson singing Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer at least 127 times.

Music is certainly a big part of the holidays, and one of the best-known Christmas carols (and certainly the longest) is The Twelve Days of Christmas. This paean to gift-giving should make every shopper who's stood in an interminable line at Best Buy thank his lucky stars that he doesn't have to come up with, oh, seven swans a-swimming. Every try wrapping a swimming swan? Let me tell you, swans are some vicious creatures.

Since 1984 PNC Bank has calculated how much it would cost to actually BUY all the items listed in the song. This year you'd need to lay out a cool $18,920.59 to give that special someone the traditional assortment of turtle doves, leaping lords, and milking maids. That's the highest-ever CPI (Christmas Price Index) since these records have been kept. And you thought bird flu had no effect on the economy.

So what to you do if, out of the blue, your Mom blindsides you and says that what she REALLY wants this year are the goodies found in The Twelve 12 Days of Christmas? Chances are you didn't budget nineteen grand for Mom's gifts. You were thinking "slippers", or "Starbucks gift card". Now what are you gonna do? Well...

Online Poker Championship

In the true Christmas spirit, UltimateBet is giving it's players ten opportunities to leverage their poker skills into a big payday. The UltimateBet Online Championship (or UBOC) is a series of ten tournaments, each with a big guaranteed payday, big enough to allow the winners to lavish presents and gifts on friends and family. That is the spirit of the holidays, remember--it's the season for giving. I'm sure each and every player will keep that in mind.

The UBOC starts this Friday, December 1st, with a no-limit Hold-Em tournament that has a guaranteed prize pool of $125,000, and it culminates on Sunday the 10th with a Final Event paying out a guaranteed ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Here's a list of the games, the times (all are Eastern Standard Time), and the guarantees:

DATE     TIME          BUY-IN           TYPE                                  GUARANTEE

12/7      8PM         $200+15        Pot-Limit Omaha (w/rebuys)         $75,000
12/8      8PM         $200+15        No-Limit Hold-Em                        $200,000
12/9      8PM         $200+15        H.O.R.S.E                                  $100,000
12/10    3PM         $500+30        No-Limit Hold-Em                        $1,000,000

As you can see there are more games than just No-Limit Hold-Em to choose from. And there are currently satellites running for each of the ten poker tournaments, just go to the "Scheduled Tournaments" tab and then select "Direct Entry Satellites". Some of the satellites have entry fees as low as $3+.30, so you won't have to make a big dent into your fruitcake fund. And, who knows, with just a little luck (and a whole lotta skill) you'll be on your way to a very Merry Christmas indeed.
