Interesting little piece in the New York Times today about Jamie Gold, who of course won the Main Event of the 2006 WSOP. The title of the article is "Tournament Winner Says He Was Wrong", yet that doesn't refer to the agreement Gold allegedly had with a friend to split his prize money. Gold and Crispin Leyser settled that disagreement (the exact terms were never announced), but in the article Gold reveals some other things he did during his run that never appeared on TV.
During one hand Gold flashed one of his cards to his opponent, which of course is a no-no. But what comes across as really egregious is Gold's admission that he gave away his hand to a friend when the two were contesting a pot. Gold:
"...I basically told a friend of mine what I had because I didn't want him to bust out and that was also really inappropriate. And I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen again. People are just going to have to forgive me."
Not sure why people "have" to forgive Gold-- it seems that decision is up to the conscience of the individual. Folks will likely be more disposed to forgive Gold if this is the last time he brings controversy and bad press to the game.
