Every successful poker player takes their own unique route to competency and beyond. Experience is essential, of course, but many players try to accelerate the learning curve by searching out those who have already figured some things out. If you visit your local Borders you'll likely find several shelves full of poker books. In addition there are scores of instructional videos to choose from as well, and lately there's been a boom in poker camps and seminars, where players can learn directly from top players while sitting at the table with them.

But even if poker is a game, and many people play because it's fun, there's no getting around the fact that trying to improve your game is hard work. Most players aren't able to synthesize all the concepts in a poker book after one read-through, and so it can take some wrestling with the material before it finally makes sense. It might seem a bit perverse that trying to get good at a game you love can be so doggone tough, but, well, that's poker.

But if you're committed to becoming the best player you can be, and you're determined to do the hard work required to improve you game, there's no reason why you should suffer any more than than is absolutely necessary. And so you might want to check out the Playboy Poker Camp, which will be held January 17th-21st at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa. Two members of Team UltimateBet are serving as instructors--Antonio Esfandiari and Jim "KrazyKanuck" Worth--along with Chris Moneymaker, David Williams, and Layne Flack. There are also four Playboy Playmates participating in the camp, but you're going strictly for the poker, right?

There are six instructional sessions during the camp and several Sit-N-Gos and tournaments for prizes. And on Saturday night there's a party for all camp attendees at the Playboy Mansion, if that's something you might be, uh, interested in. Can't imagine why that might be.

So if you're looking to mix some business with pleasure (in this case poker is the "business" part) and you'd like to learn about the game from Antonio Esfandiari and Jim Worth, the Playboy Poker Camp might make for a great time. But be prepared to put your nose to the grindstone and work your backside off. Just because there are Playboy Bunnies around is no reason to slack off. Actually, that is a pretty good reason...but try to resist it.
