One Week Until The World Series of Poker!

Yes, we're one month away from the Aruba Poker Classic, and just one week from the World Series of Poker. I know what you're thinking--didn't they just have a World Series of Poker last month? Wasn't I out in Vegas for seven glorious weeks freezing in the Amazon Room covering it? Yes, and yes. But who wants to wait for a whole year for another chance at a bracelet?

And so Harrah's has introduced the World Series of Poker--Europe. The first WSOP tournaments outside of Las Vegas will be held from September 6th-16th at The Casino at The Empire, a brand-new venue located in Leicester Square, London. Which is in England, for those of you who aren't too swift at geography.

There will be three events during the WSOP-E: a £2,500 H.O.R.S.E event, a £5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event, and the £10,000 No-Limit Hold-Em Main Event. That six-day tournament will actually be spread out among three casinos--the aforementioned Casino at the Empire, The Sportsman, and Fifty.

The best European players will no doubt be playing in these three events, as will the poker superstars on this side of the pond. There's a different vibe in European casinos compared to their America counterparts--they have dress codes (no "white trainers" are allowed at The Casino at The Empire), they frown on trash-talk, and since most either require membership or at least an admission fee you don't have as many clueless gawkers wondering around snapping pictures and clogging the aisles. It's a more dignified atmosphere, though the ruthless quality of play is still the same.

These events are getting a lot of attention, and as Harrah's wants to expand their World Series of Poker brand these tournaments are very important to them. They'd no doubt like to have a WSOP-Asia and WSOP-Latin America some day soon, and there have even been rumblings that their use of three casinos in London for the opening of the Main Event could presage the use of multiple casinos when the WSOP returns to Vegas. Who knows? What we do know is that there will be some fabulous poker action in London in half a fortnight's time.
