Marching Toward the World Series

Tomorrow is one of the darkest days on the calendar--April 15th. The day Americans have to pony up and pay their taxes. Some folks will be getting a tidy refund from the government. Some will have to write a check with so many digits that it gives one a pain in the liver. I'm in the latter category. Tomorrow I'm gonna spend some quality time with my bank account, looking at that fat, happy balance, knowing full well that in the next day or so a considerable chunk of it will be whisked away to Washington. There will be tears.
But once I recover from the depression there'll be something big to look forward to--the 2008 World Series of Poker. It seems hard to believe but the WSOP is almost upon us again, and it's going to be a busy month as poker players (and poker writers) prepare for the biggest event in poker.
Is this finally going to be the year? The year you summon all your courage, guile, and skill (and a tidy bit of cash) and sit down to play in a World Series event? Maybe even the Main Event? If you've never attended the WSOP before it can be an intimidating experience--there are thousands of people clogging the Rio's hallways, and many of the faces flashing past as you negotiate your way are familiar ones from televison. Everyone has their game face on, and an anthropologist surveying the scene would no doubt be able to pick out dozens of examples of people trying to establish their dominance and defend their territory.
Of course simply playing in the WSOP Main Event is huge in and of itself, but while you're there seeing the occasional familiar and/or friendly face might help make it a more enjoyable (and perhaps more successful) endeavor.
Which is why you should try to qualify for the World Series of Poker Main Event here at UltimateBet. Not only do our players have daily opportunities to win Main Event seats (either through direct-entry tournaments or satellites) but those who DO win seats will become members of the UB Army, which will descend on the Rio during the Main Event.
The UB Army will be a force to be reckoned with at the World Series. Everyone who qualifies at UltimateBet will enjoy a wide array of goodies and perqs during their time in Vegas, including the following:
- UB Army gear to wear while you're battling at the tables
- Access to the UltimateBet Barracks, a suite where you can grab something to drink, chat about how well you're playing, or just escape from the madness in the Amazon Room during breaks
- Mini-boot camps with UB pros like Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke, in case your game isn't quite up to snuff when the Main Event rolls around
- And you'll get to join Phil and Annie as they (and the rest of the UB Army) makes it's grand entrance at the Main Event. If you recall last year Phil was supposed to drive up in a stock car on Day One...until he had a little accident in the parking lot the day before. This time that shouldn't be a problem--rumor has it this year Phil's going to arrive at the Main Event in a tank. He should win any confrontations with light pole stanchions this time around
If a player from the UB Army cashes during the Main Event, UltimateBet will match 10% of that player's winnings and distribute it among every UB Army member. That goes for EVERY member of the UB Army who cashes--meaning that even if you get knocked out, you'll potentially have hundreds of horses to root for all the way to the final table.
And a few very special horses to keep an eye on--UB will match 25% of our online pros' Main Event winnings and divvy it up among the legions, so be sure to tell Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon, Gary "debo34" DeBernardi, Shawn Rice and Scott Ian good luck before the tournament starts. And make sure they don't stay out too late the night before they're scheduled to play.
In addition to that potential windfall, any UB Army player who makes it to the Main Event Final Table will win $200,000, and potentially more as he or she moves closer and closer to ultimate victory. Believe me, anyone from the UB Army who reaches the final table will have a VERY enthusiastic cheering section rooting them on.
There are other benefits to joining the UB Army as well, and as the World Series grown near we'll discuss them all in greater detail. For now, familiarize yourself with the program, it's benefits, and for God's sake get yourself in some satellites and qualifiers and start trying to win a seat to the Main Event. Because THIS is the year you're going to play in the World Series of Poker. And this is the year you join the UB Army.
