I'd Like A Double Helping of Hypocrisy, Please!

Via The Agitator, Radley Balko's blog, we learn that Rep. Ralph Hall (R) is holding a  fundraiser in the near future. Now, a Congressman out grubbing for money isn't news. What IS news is how Rep. Hall is enticing people to give him cash. The Congressman from the 4th District of Texas is...hosting a poker night fundraiser. Yes, for a modest $500 you can sit down to a pleasant night of playing cards and slinging chips.

Unless...unless it's all a big sting operation. You see, not only did Rep. Hall vote for the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act, he actually co-sponsored it. But somehow I don't think there will be a SWAT team armed with M-16's breaking down Hall's door with a battering ram, which happens from time to time in Texas.

So I think we get what Rep. Hall's attitude is toward poker and, in a larger sense, toward the populace in general--what's good for him isn't good for the unwashed masses. That the laws he helps to pass that limit personal freedom shouldn't limit HIS personal freedom. Or his ability to raise money to help perpetuate his hold on power.

Or, as Balko says:

Frankly, if we're going to have a Nanny Statist government protecting us from bad choices, I'd consider giving $500 to a congressman quite a bit more wasteful than spending $20 to enter an online poker tournament.

Quite.
