Yes, it's time already to start planning for the 2008 World Series of Poker. And judging by the schedule released by Harrah's yesterday, players will need that time to accumulate a ton of cash. Because if you plan on keeping a busy schedule during the WSOP, you'll need a steady supply of the green stuff. There will be 55 events, the same as last year, but there are some major changes that are worth noting.
Registration opens on May 28th, which is two days before the first tournament starts. This will hopefully help allieviate the long, long, long lines that plagued the first few days of last year's Series. There will also be satellites and cash games starting on the 28th as well, but the first event of the 2008 WSOP is a doozy, the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold-Em World Championship. There will actually be seven $10K "World Championship" events for different poker disciplines, including Heads-Up No-Limit Hold-Em, Pot-Limit Omaha, Limit Hold-Em, Omaha Hi-Lo Split, and a new Mixed Event that will have players rotating between eight different games. And, of course, the World Series will conclude with the $10,000 Main Event.
The $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament is scheduled close to the start of the Main Event, and on July 2nd Annie Duke and Don Cheadle will again be hosting the "Ante Up for Africa" charity tournament. The Main Event starts on July 3rd and the new World Champion will be crowned on July 16th. Or, July 17th, if the final table again runs past midnight.
If you don't have ten grand sitting around to play in one of the World Championship events, have no fear. There are 20 tournaments with a $1,500 buy-in. covering every game from No-Limit Hold-Em to H.O.R.S.E., along with a myriad of events with buy-ins between two- and five-thousand.
And, in news that will make everyone who played in the 2007 World Series sigh with relief, the Poker Pavilion tent will NOT be used this year. "The poker tent is gone," said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. "We heard folks loud and clear last year, and there will be no tents used for tournament play at the 2008."
