Annette Obrestad has won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker-Europe. This is big, BIG news, for a variety of reasons. Someday the fact that a woman won a poker tournament won't be the lead of the story, and while we aren't at that point just yet, every time a player like Obrestad takes down a big event that day comes closer to reality.
There's also the fact that Annette is just 18 years old, making her by far the youngest player to win a bracelet. She should be in high school, and instead she's blasting her way through one of the toughest fields in the world. She's going to be a media darling, especially in Europe, where there are legions of fantastic poker players who haven't gotten the same amount of attention as many American players have enjoyed.
I remember seeing Annette playing at last year's Aruba Poker Classic, and I remember thinking, "Who's this girl sitting behind all those chips, and how OLD is she?" I also recall that, as young as she looked, she looked completely composed and at home at the table. Actually, she looked fearless and fearsome. She finished 37th in Aruba, winning $12,415. Today's win puts a million pounds in her pocket. She's just 18. You can't help but think about what the future holds for her.
