Big Fields, Bad Beats

With the World Series of Poker behind us you might think that players around the world might take a little time off to recharge the batteries. Um...no. Not if the field in last night's UltimateBet $200,000 Guaranteed Tournament is used as evidence. Last night's field of 1,048 players was an all-time record for the Sunday Guarantee, and if you stayed to watch all seven-hours-plus you saw how cruel poker can be at times.
After taking a substantial chip lead into heads-up play allinjompa saw Faralone chop away at his stack and eventually take over the top spot. But all that hard work looked to come undone when both players, with nearly equal stacks, traded raises until all the money was in the middle. Faralone's pocket fives trailed allinjompa's pocket Jacks, and the Ah-Kc-8s flop completely missed Faralone's hand. As did the 6s on the turn, meaning that all allinjompa had to do was avoid a five on the river to give himself a commanding chip lead and, almost certainly, the victory.
We've all lost out when two-outers hit on the river. but when the 5d spiked on the river it cost allinjompa $19,116, which was the difference between the first- and second-place prize money. How much damage was done to allinjompa's computer, furniture, and other household items when that five appeared on his screen is a mystery best left to the imagination.
