Of course you know that UB is offering the Ultimate Bad Beat Jackpot, whereby a poker player who somehow manages to lose a hand with quad Eights or better stands to win a big pile of cash. Not only that, but everyone at the table gets a chunk of change as well, and every single player at UB playing at a Bad Beat table at that limit gets a taste. Now you're probably thinking that the Jackpot will be hit approximately once in a blue moon. I mean, I can't flop a set to save my life--what are the odds that I'm actually gonna get QUADS? And then LOSE the hand? Well, actually, I can see that part happeneing...
Well, if you're wondering how often someone will hit the Bad Beat Jackpot, how about twice in four hours? That's what happened this morning at UltimateBet, as two incredibly sick hands went down and made a lot of people very, very happy.
The Jackpot was up to a stratospheric $623,393.75 when a player with the name ITALIC (why is his name in caps instead of italics...just a question) made quad Eights and lost to the quad Aces of SMITH76. Normally this would be just cause for throwing your computer against the wall, but instead of committing an act of sensible violence ITALIC was probably doing the dance of joy, as he won a jaw-dropping $202,602.98 of the jackpot. I think that number bears repeating--he won $202,603.98!! On a hand he LOST.
But don't feel too bad for SMITH76 because he was unlucky enough to win the Bad Beat Jackpot hand. He received a tidy $101,301.48...in addition to whatever nickels and dimes were in the pot he took from ITALIC.
The seven innocent bystanders at their table proved the maxim that 99% of life is just showing up, as they each collected $2,366.68. What's more, 62 other players who happened to be sitting at the same type of table (and no doubt kvetching about how their boards NEVER pair) received a $1,366.68 bolt out of the blue. Fast Eddie Felson said that money won is twice as sweet as money earned. Money won by someone else and then handed over to you is sweeter still.
The confetti was still fluttering through the air when the Jackpot was hit AGAIN just four hours later. This time it was HOSSDOG556 who was the beneficiary of a horrific beat, one so ghastly that you can only hope that the $51,670.11 he received will be enough to ease his troubled mind.
