Annie Falls Just Short

Winning a second bracelet just wasn't meant to be for Annie Duke yesterday. After fighting her way through a field with some of the best players in poker, including a final table with stars like Chris Ferguson, David Benyamine, John Phan and Chris Bell, Annie finished in third place to win $75,210. Tom Schneider, who came to the final poker table as the big chip leader, used that big stack beautifully to capture his first bracelet.

Sometimes the cards just won't let you play the way you want, and that happened to Annie late in the day, when the blinds and antes soared. I spoke to two reporters who covered the final poker table, one who was following Tom and the other who monitored second-place finisher Ed Tonnellier, and they both said the same thing--Annie went card dead at the wrong time. She was elmininated when, after bricking out on two consecutive hands on fourth street, she ran into Tonnellier's monster A-A-2-3.

The first thing Annie said when I spoke to her was that Schneider played great and deserved to win. About her own play she said, "It was frustrating, I never had an hour when I made a run. I kept getting cards like K-9-2, and with the blinds and antes so high there wasn't much I could do."

But still, an outstanding start to the World Series for Annie, and there are a lot of mixed games left on the schedule this year. This event wasn't set up in the Final Table stadium but ESPN used their secondary TV table to film this poker tournament, so once again you'll get to see Annie on the small screen.
