A Slight Difference of Opinion

Reading an article in Card Player we learn that negotiations between the United States and nations who filed a World Trade Organization complaint continue. Well, calling them "negotiations" might be a bit of a stretch. You see, Antigua has asked the WTO for $3.4 billion to compensate them for the United States' refusal to allow it's citizens to use foreign online gaming sites. And the U.S. counteroffer was...$500,000.

Perhaps if the U.S. trade delegate had instead offered an extended middle finger the offer would've been less insulting. When two sides are discussing terms you usually don't see a 6,800 times difference between the offer and counter-offer. That would be like me totalling your $50,000 car and offering you seven bucks to square the deal. Quite the difference.

A decision on sanctions won't be made until October 22nd, which means there's possibly more time for the two sides to come to an agreement. Though that seems a bit unlikely considering the gap between them. There's still plenty of time for talk and arm-twisting (especially among those industries who don't want to see Antigua legally pirating their products if the WTO gives the island nation the right to ignore U.S. copyright laws), so we'll have to wait and see what develops during the next month.
