A Phil On Every Can

How does one measure fame and success in America? Should we look at how many magazine covers feature your lovely face, or how many paparazzi stalk your every waking moment? If the house you grew up in is declared a National Historical Landmark, does this mean you've made it?

Perhaps...but if you're looking for a unique path to immortality having your image gazing out from newsstands or tour guides leading schoolchildren through your bedroom won't cut it. It's been done. You need to think outside of the box.

Or, maybe, outside of the can.

Phil Hellmuth has won more World Series of Poker bracelets than any other player, capturing his eleventh last year. The WSOP powers that be wanted to honor Phil's achievement in some special way and they've come up with an idea that anyone who's ever been thirsty will admire. Phil's picture, bio, and some of his most famous quotes will appear on cans of Milwaukee's Best beer during the World Series. Milwaukee's Best is the lead sponsor of the World Series of Poker and Miller Brewing will produce 12 million cans featuring Phil Hellmuth this summer.

Phil recently visited the plant in Milwaukee that produces the cans and for a Wisconsin boy having your photo on those cans is a signal honor.

"Watching the can come off the line and then having them hand me one was amazing," Hellmuth said. "You know about the promotion. You see it coming. You see the art work. You approve it all. But to actually see the can...

"It was like winning a (WSOP) bracelet, it really was. I was just on Cloud Nine. It was awesome. Unfortunately, when I win a bracelet, my ego gets knocked up a little bit and now my wife has to beat me up a little more."

Last year Milwaukee's Best was sold from a small bar located in the final table arena and chances are the bar will be back this year. Should Phil win bracelet #12 this year, will he celebrate by cracking open a can of Milwaukee's Best or popping the cork on a magnum of Dom Perignon? And as yet there's no word from WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack if you'll get a 10-minute penalty if you're playing with Phil and crush one of his cans at the table.
