A New Chapter

Tomorrow, for the first time, the World Series of Poker will live up to the first word in it's name. The first bracelet event held outside Las Vegas will be the £2,500 H.O.R.S.E. tournament that starts tomorrow in London. There's a press conference tomorrow morning at 11AM London time--don't ask me what time that is where you are, it's probably in the dead of night--that will feature a mano-e-mano debate between Phil Hellmuth and David "Devilfish" Ulliot. Which, as you might imagine, should be quite interesting. Devilfish has the home-court advantage, while Hellmuth has the reach...call it a toss-up.
I mentioned last week that there's a dress code at the casinos where the WSOP-E are held, and here's a snippet of the official policy:
"Players are strongly encouraged to wear collared shirts while in the casino at all times. Smart jeans, trousers, or long pants are required for gentlemen with no shorts permitted. No open-toed shoes, flip-flops, or sandals will be allowed within the casino at any time and white sports trainers or sneakers are discouraged."
I found the phrasing of the first part interesting--players are "strongly encouraged to wear collared shirts". Well, what if you DON'T wear a collared shirt? Will security drag you out by the collar? How so, if you're wearing an uncollared shirt? You see the problem? I guess they could just pick you up bodily and use your head to open the door...I guess that'd work.
I'm a total Anglophile, and I love the phrase "smart jeans". Instead of listing all the jeans that you CAN'T wear (ripped jeans, jeans with the knees torn out, those ghastly acid-washed jeans from the 80s) the casino tells you that only "smart jeans" are allowed and let the player do the heavy lifting. Do those grass-stained Levi's you bought back in 1998 really qualify as "smart"? Comfortable? Yes. Smart? No.
So tomorrow we'll find out how some of the best poker players in the world interpret the dress code. And, oh yeah, see who puts themselves in position for the first bracelet in WSOP-E history.
