A Matter of Degrees

The World Series of Poker Main Event starts today, and I have one last piece of advice for those of you playing in this beyond-huge event. It's going to be over 110 degrees in Las Vegas for the next five days (at least), and that means you need to dress appropriately. You'll definitely want to bring a jacket, maybe a zip-up sweatshirt, something with a hood would be a good option...

Before you think the heat's gotten to me, let me point out that the Amazon Room can get very, very cold. Very cold. So cold that there have been times when I've been drinking cup after cup of coffee for the warmth, not the caffeine. And I fully expect that with this crippling heat wave the air conditioning will be set on DefCon 5. So if you're planning to show up in a tank top, shorts, and flip-flops, be advised that you can buy World Series of Poker-branded sweatshirts in the lobby. I believe they're $40.

I do not think there are any plans to have tables set up in the Player's Pavilion tent. At times that tent has been so hot as to be unbearable. How unbearable? Well, you may have heard that Erick Lindgren won a $340,000 prop bet against a collection of players when he played four rounds of golf, shooting under 100 each round, in temperatures over 100 degrees. An accomplishment that everyone has been talking about for weeks. Thing is, about a week earlier Lindgren was playing a tournament out in the Pavilion and it was so hot he had a wet towel wrapped around his head. It was so hot he tried to organize a walkout to protest the conditions. This from a guy who carried his own bag around one of the toughest golf courses in Vegas on a blistering July day on a prop bet.

Harrah's installed blowers to, well, blow cold air into the tent, and it's nickname quicly changed from the "Poker Sauna" to the "Poker Igloo". So, if you're playing on one of the four Day One's over this weekend, all I can do I tell you to be prepared. It might be 115 outside, it might be 60 inside. Bring along some versatile clothing and it might give you a big advantage at the tables.
