Poker is a popular fundraiser for charities, a fact that isn't often acknowledged by those trying to stigmitize it. Poker is a social game, you can play and enjoy without having big money riding on the outcome. In fact, it's so much fun that people are actually willing to PAY to play--especially if they know their money is going toward a good cause.
During the World Series of Poker actor Don Cheadle and professional player Annie Duke will host a $5,000 tournament to raise awareness of the situation in Darfur. The Ante Up For Africa tournament will be held on July 5th and will feature some of the biggest names in both show biz and poker. How big?
"A list of the poker players and celebrities who've "expressed their intent to play" are (Don) Cheadle, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt. Jason Alexander, Jennifer Tilly, Hank Azaria, George Clooney, Matt Damon, George Lopez, Danny Masterson, Mekhi Phifer, Ray Romano, Adam Sandler, and James Woods."
If you're interested in playing you can register for the tournament and read more about it here. The structure is designed to get the event over in five hours, so it shouldn't interfere with the rest of your WSOP schedule. Unless you spend the rest of the evening canoodling with George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
