Scared Money is Dead Money

I'm sure most people have heard the saying scared money is dead money. In the poker world I believe this statement to be completely true. It's typically very easy to pick out scared money at the table, and exploit it. If you find that this is you, you need to do what it takes to be comfortable within the limits you are playing.

A lot of a players comfort level within a game is directly linked to bankroll management. If you are playing outside of your bankroll you are likely to play different, often a lot more timid that you normally would. This is a bad thing. Most good players can pick out the timid players at the table and take advantage of them. Often times if I am deep in a big tournament, I will research the players at my table to see how much experience and winnings they have. The purpose of this is to see how much the money means to them. If I see a player who hasn't had many big cashes, I may play them a little harder at bubble time, and pay jump bubbles.

With the UBOC2 underway many of the events stand to have a lot of players who have won a seat via feeder. My advice to these players is to play it the same as you would any tournament. If you normally play 5 dollar tournaments and you find yourself in the UBOC 1k main event, play it as if it were a 5 dollar tournament. Playing scared will be detected and exploited by good players. Try not to think of the money, just play your normal game.

If you are concerned about the money you are likely playing scared, and that's a recipe for disaster.

Good Luck
